At DIW print, we know well that as a seller, you can't do without certain printed materials. If the environmental impact of producing them matters to you, follow our advice:
Choose paper from verified sources, with an eco-certification
In your design, reduce the areas of color and consult the print shop about suitable dimensions
When it comes to finishing, make sure the printed piece can still be recycled

Certified paper guarantees origin from responsibly managed sources
When choosing paper, we recommend clients opt for those with FSC® certification. It guarantees that the wood comes from sustainable forestry and that the strict standards of the Forest Stewardship Council were observed during paper production and throughout the entire processing chain. The FSC® logo also makes it easy to identify such products and gives your customers the option to look up information about how the printed piece was processed using a specific number. In our article on FSC® you'll find all the important information about this certification.

FSC® is the most common certification, but by far not the only one you may encounter with printed materials. We've summarized them for you in a clear table. It doesn't matter which one you ultimately choose. What's important is that you take certifications into account when selecting paper.
Design affects the amount of waste in production
Print production naturally generates waste from inks and materials that requires specific disposal methods. For nature-friendly printing, it is therefore important to make key decisions during the design process in order to minimize production waste.
You can do this by opting for a design with smaller areas of color. Minimalist designs, which don't require many colors, are currently extremely popular in print, so your printed piece can be both more sustainable and stylish.
The amount of waste after production is also affected by the format you choose. That's why we recommend consulting your design with the print shop so that together we can make maximum use of the printing sheet.
Planning to add finishing? Think about recyclability!
Some printed products, such as boxes for more expensive products or business cards, need to serve an aesthetic function as well. We can achieve this using various finishing techniques that add value to the printed piece. Even among these, there are methods that are more eco-friendly and that don't affect the ability to separate and recycle the printed piece.
Among the most sustainable are blind embossing (blind deboss/emboss), embossing without foil or with foil covering at most 15%–20% of the surface, or UV varnishes applied without lamination and covering up to 15% of the surface. Printed pieces finished using these methods can be recycled.
Laminated printed products are not recycled under our conditions, but we recommend using lamination for products meant to have a longer lifespan – books, catalogs, or brochures. Thanks to lamination, you won't need to reprint them repeatedly when they wear out.

DIW print's recommendations for eco-friendly printing:
Choose paper with an eco-certification
Consider large areas of color in your design and consult the print shop about a suitable format
For finishing, prefer blind embossing, or foil embossing and varnishes with smaller coverage
Print only as much as you'll use for your sales
Think about nature when planning your unboxing experience
