Don't underestimate choosing the right packaging, even if you sell online. Here are a few tips, from basic principles and design to form and material, with attention to detail and respect for nature.

Protect, Store and Sell Your Product

A good package should do all of this. First, answer the basic question: how will your customers come into contact with the packaging? Do you sell a product that needs packaging only for delivery? Or do you sell jewelry, cosmetics or accessories, where the packaging gets more attention? Do you sell your product in brick-and-mortar stores as well, or only online? The answers to these questions influence your choice of form, material and design.

For packaging intended only for delivery, a box without print, complemented for example with a sticker, may be enough. If your packaging plays a bigger role in the sale, pay attention to its overall look and opt for higher-quality material and special surface finishes. This is especially true if you have a more expensive product and can afford to invest in packaging.

Don't Underestimate Preparation

Before you turn to a designer, browse blogs or social networks such as Instagram or Pinterest. It's important to have an idea of what your new packaging could look like. Do you want something minimalist for your product, or do you prefer more intricate designs? At this stage you should also prepare all the necessary materials. You can't do without specific product texts and your brand's logo.

Your packaging will also need mandatory labelling, such as information about what it's made of and how to dispose of it. Every type of product requires its own markings. For cosmetics, for example, the packaging must also include the expiry date and information about ingredients and manufacture.

How to Approach the Design

The design of new packaging should reflect the qualities of your product. It should be clear what the product is meant for. It should be authentic and memorable. And it certainly shouldn't be misleading. At the same time, when designing it, you should also think about the possibility of expanding your product line in the future. Do you have different product ranges? Keep that in mind when designing packaging.

Function Determines Form

When choosing the type of packaging and the material it will be made of, think above all about practicality. What packaging will be the most suitable for your product and the way it's sold?

The most commonly used packaging for products is boxes made of smooth cardboard, used for cosmetics or medicines, for example. Boxes made of coated cardboard are more complicated to produce, which makes them ideal for more expensive products such as jewelry and watches.

Some products are better suited to bags, while others require specific custom-made packaging, like this one for BajaBee beeswax wraps.

Let's Not Forget Nature

When choosing packaging for your product, it's essential to consider the environmental impact of its production. As a seller, you can contribute to sustainability yourself by choosing FSC® certified paper, which comes from responsibly managed forests.

A recent study showed that almost three quarters of surveyed respondents from Europe, the USA and South American countries would be willing to pay more for eco-friendly product packaging. It is therefore highly likely that your customers will appreciate your emphasis on environmental responsibility.

How to Stand Out

The charm is in the details. If the packaging for your product also needs to serve an aesthetic function, you can choose from various print finishing techniques. With embossing, blind embossing or the application of metallic foils, you can make your packaging design more distinctive and add value to it. Keep in mind, however, that a more complex design with surface finishes can significantly increase the price of your new packaging.

Let's Pack It Up!

You're surely interested in how much new packaging for your products would cost. The final price is affected by the complexity of the design, the type of packaging, the chosen material, the selection among various surface finishes, the complexity of processing, and also the number of pieces you order.

If your production requires ordering packaging in only a few pieces, consider having it custom-made. But know that an investment in good packaging is something that pays off quickly.

We look forward to your questions and insights in the comments. Let's get packing!
